The sports writer known as John Canzano is going to be emulated in this column, while also being described in a matter of fact manner so as not to take sides on any issue being held. The next quote will shatter this neutrality by posturing an opinionated quote by someone personally affected by this.
"I'm not entirely sure how to go about this assignment," local student Sam Trickey says to himself in response to the assignment. "But I can tell you that I hate it very much." For the last year he has been waiting for the school year to end, and now it finally seems as if it will. He wont be attending the Graduation ceremony, and he certainly doesn't want to waste bowling hours on this assignment.
"I really don't like this, but its what you gotta do." Astute readers will note that this assignment doesn't really have an over arching theme, but just relies on numbers and winding dialogue so commonly prevalent in sports writing. The column he is trying to emulate is not actually about sports, and this makes it pretty alright. The actual story relies on the rape victims quotes, and he couldn't find a good way to emulate the situation of someone who has definitely experienced much worse. "I just feel so helpless, he says.
Mr. Winter could not be reached for comment on this article, but if he did I would include him in the style of John Canzano, which is to say split up two different people stories into two parts of a story.

current events finale
1. The Labay family wants to demolish a problematic century old house in West Austin so that they might pay for the costs of operating the half-century old drug store nearby. I think that the Labays are in the right here, but the compromise in which the house is restored and sold off seems promising as well.
2. UT and A&M (and the University of New Mexico) have proposed that they join forces to restart the Cold War by contributing to the already massive surplus of WMDs. They will be researching at Sandia, where the non-nuclear parts of city-killing nuclear packages will be researched. A true victory for all who want to see our glorious nation bring us from 3 minutes to midnight down to 2!
Fuck nukes.
3. The Bill Cosby sexual assault trial will proceed, and Bill will finally have to (maybe) face the consequences of his actions. His lawyers argue that this is a ploy to make Bill confess to a previous civil suit, something the former district attorney had said they would not do. They are being stupid. This story needs to be on the front page so that people do not forget that this is an ongoing matter, and that the right thing needs to be done. This is relevant, and plays with the idea of timeliness as well as justice. (conflict)
4. The school formerly known as Robert E. Lee has now been planned to be renamed as Russell Lee, but there was a dissenting vote who called for it to be named after Bettie Mann, the school's first African American teacher. Russell Lee was a photographer, but that isn't really the important part of the story because the only purpose of the renaming was to stop glorifying confederate generals and warriors who fought for slavery in the south. It will still be named Lee school, but at (Lee)ast the memory of R. Lee will no longer be honored there.
5. The Baylor sexual scandal will likely result in Ken Starr being fired. The scandal is over the abnormally large amounts of sexual assault done by the football players at Baylor, and the kind of investigations there are to these accusations at Baylor. I think that ALL universities are in need of serious reform in terms of how they deal with sexual assault, as it is becoming more and more clear that these kinds of activities are still happening, which is bad.

1. I liked the Missoulian front page, simply because i cannot believe that thats what they call it. It also has a strange column method, putting the big column header in the center.
2. Little Fuss in Oaths of Office. I forgot fuss was a word, and now i am happier having remembered this.
3. 4 stories
4. They all have a big column with a bunch of smaller columns in squares
5. Theres different numbers of stories and different topics of stories.

wouldnt it be nice
Do you remember the first day of high school? You showed up, a young freshman, ready to take on the world! You were assigned eight different classes, all of which challenged and captivated you. You were finally going to escape the dark middle school years, and find a specialized group of people who shared your interests and desires. It was great!
Except, thats not what really happened. Odds are, you were shoved off from the theater class of your dreams into some business course that nobody wanted to be in or actually took seriously. A "Dump Class", that one shared experience that broke the illusion that the current American school system is actually functional. But can it be changed?
All around the board the schooling system is mostly the same. There are five(ish) core required classes; a math class, a science class, a history class, an english class, and a semi-optional foreign language class of your choice. But, as we mentioned earlier, there are eight different classes, leaving you with the amazing choice of either doing a half assed P.E. class or a different half assed health class. Wouldn't it be better to include a study hall in the place of these? Around half of the people in David Winter's journalism class applied for a different, in some cases required class, and were switched in, leaving the class composed of students unhappy and deprived of their right as a student
to learn what they want, not what the school wants.
Essentially, its kinda messed up that we have all taken the dump class aspect of high school for something that can't be changed, and not as something that can be minimized, if not outright eradicated with more funding or a serious retooling of the American High school system.

closedf polling elections explicitly favor the non independents and played a huge role in hillarys win. voters are being disenfranchised bro
1. Andrew Jackson will be replaced with Harriet Tubman and the other dollar bills will have influential women on the back of them. Originally they were going to change Hamilton too, but the theater geeks would make too much of a fuss because of Hamilton the musical.
2. In the aftermath of the flint water crisis, there were 3 officials charged for covering up the pipe negligence to make money, which is rare these days due to the government basically getting away with being neglectful. They tampered the evidence, didn't take necessary precautions, and willfully misleading others about the water quality. Rick "Dick Dastardly" Snyder is going to drink the poisoned water for 30 days in order to prove how he DIDNT poison countless Flint children and adults for years through negligence. He isn't going to hell, no sir!
3. They are invigorated because the gods of capitalism have shone down brightly upon their campaigns after their wins in New York. They are depressingly close to winning the nominations, and Hillary could still win even if they lost every other contest. Trump could still lose. This tuesday, the Primaries in Pennsylvania will take place. The "Win" in New York interrupted Bernie's recent streak of wins, even if the win was contributed to by disenfranchising independents and poor parts of the city.
4. The head of the state education agency was sued by a Texas teachers union over a new, unfair system which ties teacher marks to student progress. They hope to make it so that this system is not implemented. The AISD isn't implementing the system currently, as it is not mandatory. They do not use a Value Added Model, which is a model that measures teachers' effectiveness on student scores.
5. Volkswagen is going to spend one billion dollars on reparations for americans who bought the cars that cheat on emissions test. This is necessary because this is a violation of the Clean Air act, and reparations must be made. This is not enough, so it is just the tip of the iceberg.'
6. Hundreds feared Dead in Shipwreck (A2)
THere are at least 500 casualties in a shipwreck on the Mediterranean. This is bad. HOo boy this is super bad and it really says a lot about current immigration policies in eastern europe.
I chose this article because PEOPLE DIED!!!! and that s bad. aals0 we r learning about this in World Geograpthpy so whoopdie doo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canzano: 16 years after Oregon State football gang-rape allegation, Brenda Tracy steps from the shadows
yeah that one
Neon Genesis Evangelion!
1. They found her body, and charged Meechaiel Khalil Criner with the strangling. The source was anonymous. They provided this information because they felt obligated to help out the public in the murder of the woman. This has attracted national coverage due to the shock value inherent in a murder of a young woman.
2. Tech employers tend to pay women less than men for the same job. Hired.com is a website dedicated to surveying the jobs and salaries of different people in the area. The cause of this inequity, says Hired.com, is the fact that women expect and are expected to settle for a lower salary than men. This doesn't really say much about technology companies in general, but more about the state of the american job market. The article does seem like it is promoting Hired.com a bit to much, but that probably just because all the instances in which it says the name are highlighted.
3. Pat McCrory tried to go back on his law banning transgendered people access to the bathrooms that match their gender identity, but took half measures, only implementing an executive order that disallows discrimination in jobs. The ACLU called him out on this. Many businesses and performers have cancelled the projects and tours for the state, as a protest to the law.
4. The number of child suicide bombers in Boko Haram has increased 11-fold from 4 to 44 in a year. A consequence of this trend, aside from the many deaths, is a distrust of children, which will cause distraught in the communities. These are not suicide attacks due to the children being forced into them or not truly understanding the consequences of their actions. Boko Haram is an Islamic extremist terrorist group that terrorizes Africa as a way to reclaim the lands that they were "forced out" of. It and Al-Qaida are both aligned in religion and both have similar goals, but are different in location. Many people join them to get ahead economically.
5. Story on Flint Michigan water crisis. Told people to start to use water in order to flush out the pipes to accelerate the repair rate. Very good, quick and informative.
6. The top ten list is essentially a very formulaic cluster of sports columns, shortened down for people to pick and choose the athletes that they support. It wasn't interesting, and I would cut all of them and replace it with something that didn't appeal to the crotchety old men who read these.

i hate u dad
Bike racing is an intense sport. I should know, my relationship with my dad growing up was largely based on the many bike races he took me to. We would always go to the racetrack out on the country to watch him race along with 40 of his identical rivals. It was never not hot; the cracked asphalt and insane surrounding climate made for an almost deadly combination. The food trucks were parked out by the road so that they might capitalize on the hungry cycling fanatics by selling expensive burritos and tacos. They were absolutely loaded with spicy material; the kind designed to make you buy another one of their equally expensive sparkling waters from their shop. The food wasn't bad, but I never was able to order them myself, being a shy ten year old with no money to my name. The races took about an hour and a half, and I hated almost every second of it. Words cannot describe how much I hated going to these races. It took years before my dad actually took me seriously when I told him on how I never wanted to go back to the racetrack again. "It'll grow on you son," he always said. "I need your support when I'm out on the track." That was bullshit, most of the time I couldn't even recognize him when he zoomed past every ten or so minutes. He was never in it for me, even as a little kid I saw right through that. He did it for him. He did it for himself, and now every time he mentions that he went on bike ride that morning I can't help but feel that that selfish part of my father never truly went away.

its like buutter baby
The New York Times may not have been completely accurate in the execution of the story, but that still does not excuse the NFL's inadequacy to help make sports an activity where nobody has to die. The NFL's main point was that the tests were preliminary, and had been taken over 15 years ago. However, I don't believe this to be a long enough time to change ways completely, and the fact that all concussion reports are not mandated is a shady dealing in it's best. The Times should probably retract the article for the little mistakes, but this shouldn't be the end of the crusade to make sports safer.

Game stories are very important but its sometimes difficult to pull off due to the ever shifting public eye. Its also true that if a newspaper is too hasty with their story and ends up not covering the story fairly there will be massive pushback from sports fans and the like.
Storyline is the base of a Sports story, as it is all other stories. It captivates the audience even more than they would be than just regular statistics. You provide Context for the story for those who havent already seen it or dont know the surrounding information. You provide quotes to maintain a human aspect of authenticity, and provide the Key Statistics and Plays to keep a level of professionalism.
Put the context in the nut graph, as well as some of the statistics.
Get quotes from all sides of the story, try to find the other side of the story.
done lol

prartivcle farticle retrarticle ptbhthhhththhhhhh
The Rolling Stone article failed in the sense that the journalist took everything her singular (?) source said for truth, and little embellishments and exaggerations went unnoticed due to the time constraints and the journalist being so shocked by Jackie's story. They didn't seek out the three friends that Jackie described coming back to after the rape and published a story featuring them in an unflattering light without getting their side. Basically, the moral of the story is that for all stories journalists should stick to a certain code, use many sources for each story, and make sure that it doesn't get to be published without rigorous investigation.

WELL OK WHAT EVERY BODY I COULDNT WRITE 500 WORDS OFF A MINUTE ONG INTERVIEW SO GET OF MY BACK MAYBE
Lilli Niester began high school with a goal. Many goals, in fact, she is ending her senior year with an impressive array of accomplishments. She started out doing Orchestra and Blue Brigade in her freshman year, continued with both for another three years, and is ending this one with 3 awards in the former. She's a part of the National Honor's Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and is the current leader of Model U.N. and Philosophy club. She has tutored for two years, made Honor Roll for three, honestly it would be easier to say what she hasn't done. When we asked her what she's most proud of, she said that she honestly couldn't decide.
McCallum will be missed. Austin's inherent strangeness has left a mark on the school, and Lilli by extension. She knew that it wasn't the typical high school experience, but maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. As she and her friends face their futures, it's hard not to reminisce.
She is not sure of where to go to for college, but when she does, she said that she would probably major in Neuroscience, and possibly take a double in Psychology.

ONLY NINEDDDY S KIDS REMMBER WHY SPIDERS INHABIT BY PEVLIS
1. The police internal investigation of the shooting of an unarmed black teen last month has concluded. The timing of the announcement is significant due to the deadline being just days after. Officials could schedule a disciplinary hearing for him as soon as this week, request additional information, or exonerate him completely. The records will be released only if he is suspended for more than one day.
2. They want to be U.S. citizens so they can vote against Donald Trump. This illustrates how naturalization usually occurs most often in election years, but Donald Trump's harsh anti-Mexican policies have encouraged many to be eligible to vote against him. President Obama made it easier to do this by launching a campaign that allows people to be eligible if they pay a fee. Trump probably would've said something racist in response to this.
3. A drop of drilling fees has crippled the TRC's funds, of which are 75% drilling fees. If they fall, the federal government will take over, which is something conservatives wish to avoid.
4. Nancy Reagan died. Michelle Obama is going to be at her funeral. Michelle Obama is going to because she knew her personally and as a first lady, she feels a connection. Her legacy is the Reagan library, which she spent the last 15 years guiding.
5. Erin Andrews got 55 million for her lawyer finding that a nude video taken of her and uploaded to the internet was also the hotel she was staying at's fault. The parents expressed fear at the fact that a stalker could still be watching her at the testimony. The stalker as well as the two companies that owned the hotel were found responsible and shared the 55 Million sum. The guilty parties responded by saying that they should not take responsibility due to the stalker being so determined. This is fair.
6. Gay couples have adoption rights no matter if they move across state line. Alabama denied a mother's right to visit her 3 children who she raised with her former partner. It was Unanimous. The justices did not bother to hear the arguments.

stroyisisi an rapus
The story is very well written; it has to be when the subject matter is so serious. The problem of college rape and serial rapists is very well addressed, and the fact that the organization designed to help actually benefits from not helping is very telling to the current state of affairs involving colleges and sexual assault. The story is well reported, and I like it a lot.

STEVENE POTERY IS BAAAAD
Option One:(what I am doing)
Stephen Glass was a very manipulative journalist both in his work and to his colleagues. He dramatizes events and makes up stuff that didn't even happen in order to draw attention to the New Republic during the events of the story. After a minor detail was misreported in his story, he immediately offers to resign, emotionally manipulating his current editor. Glass also exhibits hypocrisy, as he tears into an intern for poor reporting when he himself barely reports actual events.

Ruth Shalit
Ruth Shalit was a writer for the New Republic, just like Stephen Glass. However, Ruth was dismissed for only one, mega-article, one with major errors involving quotes on the Washington Post staff and making up a criminal record for a contractor. She was dismissed from the New Republic for this.

SPORTS ARE BAD ABD ABAD BAD IDEAS ITS HARMFUL
I honestly do not believe that "The Mourning Anchor" should be considered a great piece of journalism. It might have been great then, with all the antiquated ideals and such, but now? It comes off as too long and goes off on describing Gumbel as the Mary Sue type character that everyone should aspire to be. The story does make an attempt to make the character relatable and deconstruct the notion of the macho-man image, but I honestly do not think that even the most hardcore sports fans would want to sit through a very long tirade about this one man's struggle with being affluent. I do find it relatable near the end. Many people have issues with their family that affect the way they live their life. Gumbel never made any friends on his journey to success due to his upbringing; this is a pretty common trope. But the entire story REVOLVES around this conflict. This story has been done to death already, and I am certain that this was not the originator. It does not deserve the title of being a great piece of journalism.

MY FRIEDNS CAT DIED"_! SHES AT YTHE PURRLY GATES
Portrait of a middle aged high school soccer coach
"Coaching." Martin says. "It's a lot more difficult than most people would imagine. It isn't just drills, you have to make sure that your team works as a cohesive unit on the field, and part of that includes making sure that they're in the right mindset. If a kid just went through a bad breakup, they will likely will not be giving their all on the field. Sometimes you gotta delve deep into each individual's personal problems; act as a mentor for these occasionally really messed up teens." He shakes his head a little. "It's tricky stuff."
A couple of years ago, Martin was put in charge of a fresh batch of Varsity high schoolers, the majority of which were freshman. He knew that an inexperienced band of 14-15 year old newbies would not be able to compete with the rest of the interscholastic competition. So he decided that that year, the main goal would not be to win the tournament. It would be to train the team for the next one. They worked and trained like usual that year, and when the season's results were in, they finished dead last. But, they knew that this was not the end. The next year they fought and fought and made it into a tight second place finish. It was magical.
In the end however, Nick Martin only accepted the coaching position for one reason. It wasn't the thrill of winning, not the satisfaction from watching a team grow and evolve, not even so he could bond with the team. "I like soccer." he said. Three words, and Nick Martin aligned himself with most of the planet in loving to watch and play the most popular sport. Amazing.

SPORTS ARE MAD TIMES pt 1
Jake Gisondi gives this advice in his article. He says that you should:
1. Introduce conflict into the story, but it doesn't have to be resolved. This is very important.
2. Decide on a definitive news angle before writing your story.
3. Make sure to describe the setting whenever possible. It adds coherence to the story.
4. Develop your pivotal main character. Give them complexity to captivate the readers.
5. Try not to interject yourself into the story so much. Give an omniscient tone that mimics most novels.
6. Cut out scenes that don't further the story being covered. No-one likes a time waster.
7. Be fair in your descriptions of people. This doesn't mean that you have to be neutral all the time, just covering most aspects of the person's story.
8. Keep a "Beginning Middle and End" format. Again, mimic a story being told.

CUCKROACH SUCKROA+CH-
1. Results of Iowa Caucus: Sanders and Clinton in a close tie only broken by coin flips in favor of Clinton; Ted Cruz got first over a essentially tied Trump and Rubio. Bernie's relative success is part of Clinton's failure to connect with the younger voters, who are a huge demographic. Ted Cruz's success over Trump is surprising, along with Rubio's sudden uprising, Cruz credits his to a large grass roots campaign, while Rubio's sudden momentum is a bit of a mystery.
2. Predictions:
I think that Bernie's campaign has definitely peaked in notoriety, now all it is is a matter of showing people that Bernie is capable of drawing in enough votes to combat the Republicans for the presidency. Donald Trump will do something outlandish again, but enough conservatives will vote for Ted Cruz in the primaries.

Death of a President
Former President Sam Trickey changed the western world with his politics. Until yesterday, however, no one knew where he went after his controversial 8 year stint as leader of the Executive branch of government. Controversial is the only word for describing Sam Trickey; his politics were dangerously socialist leaning, which hadn't been the case for any presidential figure or candidate since 2016. "Killed," he said in an interview, "is how I think I'll die. One of these days, some angry farmer from the deep South will grab his gun and try to shoot me during a speech. It's inevitable."
Years ago, after stepping down as President, Trickey disappeared. Only his family seemed to have an inkling of where he went, because they had vanished too. Until the government themselves confirmed that he had been relocated for his own safety, people had theorized what had happened to him; it kept all media sated for years, but the mystery finally came to an true end yesterday, when they identified a corpse from midtown as belonging to the former President of the United States.
December 21st, 2068. Austin was feeling a bit chilly around this time, with low 40s and high 60s. Vendors in the stadium were selling hot dogs; it was the special Winter Solstice game. In the Smith's family, this was just another game to watch, and they were just another family watching it. Dentist's appointment coming up for the young ones, Dad thought that they would want a special treat. What nobody expected was twofold: Dear old Mr. and Mrs. Smith were actually a former President and former First Lady, and that Mr Smith would crash his suburban into a tree, killing him instantly.
It took about five days for the truth to come out about Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Nobody was very surprised that he went back to Austin; it was their original home, and several neighbors actually claimed to have known from the very start their true identities. Tears flew from the former First Lady's eyes, "I always thought he was being a bit paranoid." she sniffed. "Even when the second assassination attempt happened, I always thought that total relocation was a bit excessive." Renee, their daughter, couldn't be reached for an interview, but their publicist told the media that the Trickey family would be returning to the public spotlight to clear up any last mysteries.
Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

BRASS CUNKEY< THET FUKNEY SKRUNKEY JUNKIE DUNKEI
1. Glenn Hegar is the Comptroller for oil prices, he was asked if the falling oil prices meant trouble for Texas's economy. He said no. Texas has been about half as dependent on its fossil fuel industry since 2013, and with huge increases in the hospital and healthcare industries making up for the losses in the fossil fuel industry. Severance taxes are the taxes on oil and fuel sales, and the lower the cost, the lower these taxes are.
2. Trump isn't participating the Republican debate because he wants to spite and avoid Fox, citing them as using his popularity and controversy to garner ratings. This is risky because it is the last one before the important Iowa caucus. He is instead hosting a charity for wounded warriors and veterans. I don't think it'll have a negative effect on his campaign, he gets media coverage wherever he goes. The democratic candidates are wondering whether to go to a non party approved debate. Martin O'malley said he would go, Bernie said no, Hillary said she would if her competitors would. It looks like noone will be going, so the event wont take place. This is 5 days before New Hampshire primary.
3. They are fighting a virus that causes birth defects from mosquitos. They said they would distribute mosquito repellent to pregnant women in exchange for cash benefits. Zika, Dengue, and Microcephaly are all diseases transmitted by the mosquitos in earlier years, and they have all been catastrophic. Castro said that it would be useless to try and fight back against this, due to it already have been too late. This is controversial because this is a very fatalistic and not good enough response to the outbreak. BRazil will host the olympics although.
4. Steven Weinberg is attempting to have a no guns in the classroom rule. McRaven is going to have a talk with the teachers to make sure that they are upholding the law. It goes into effect August 1st, another open carry law went into effect January 1st. Justin said that most of the people concealed carrying continued to conceal carry, it just didn't have much effect.
5. Ken Paxton is a texas attorney who objects to the allegedly inadequate notice of the 7 resettled syrian refugees. Last Friday, the government resettled some refugees in Texas without telling them who and where they are. Paxton asked a judge to stop the flow of refugees, to which the judge said no, and that the concerns were frivolous and blown out of proportion.
6. If the girls win their game against Arkansas, it would be the 1000th game won in Texas school history. The problem is that Texas is tied for 12th place, and the season has not been very good thus far. Their weakness is sloppy offensive positions.
7. I prefered the New York Times article, the leads hit mostly the same notes, but the NYT article was more thorough and I thought it looked better.

Friday agaim, garfie baby.
The newspaper business is not what it used to be, due to television and the internet becoming the dominant form of news-gathering. So, in order to survive, journalists must improve on what journalists are good at doing, rather than try and fail to mimic what the digital people do. He suggests doing this by captivating the reader's attention as a whole, rather than just keeping them interested on a per-minute basis. The way he says to do it is to break it down into four parts: the lead, the middle, the overall idea, and the end.
1) LEADS:
Leads are intended to hold the readers attention until they come to the information later in the article. Misdirection is used to bait the reader into actually reading before switching it out to add a shock element to the story, keeping the reader involved. Painting a scene, then immediately pulling out the surprise of the story is a good way to "Arrest the reader's attention." You can also try to add the information beforehand, starting out with some softball character building before hitting them with the immediate tragedy; the entire reason this story is being put in the news. This type of writing is good for keeping people interested in the huge stories; the types of stories that most people would normally be too intimidated by the length to get past the first paragraph. You need to make sure that the first paragraph is worth reading, in order to keep people around until the end.
2) THE MIDDLE:
For the Middle, you already have the reader's attention, now you have to be unique in your writing. Nowadays, people have already seen the main angle from about seven different sources, and people will not stay if all you plan on doing is recapping the main idea they have already seen. If you make the angle cover the story from a more human aspect; if you really hit close to home with the readers, then you have a good story.
3) ENDINGS:
Many journalists make the mistake of having a huge declaration of an ending, but the more subtle your ending, the better. If you end your story with a scene, rather than a recap of what the reader has literally just read, you allow the people to form their own judgements, even if you were about as anvilicious as a televangelist throughout the rest of the story. People are pretty smart, they don't need you to say, "And that's terrible," at the end of everything; they already know how to experience emotion! Add the human element to capture the essence of the great drama you have written; and when all is said and done, end it with a small scene to allow the readers to ruminate on what they have just read.
QUOTES
The guy with the gun shot Alan Burnett in the back of the head. A sentence. That’s it. one sentence.
this one is pretty neat because it really shows how being brief with your wham lines can have a very strong effect on your readers.
What this has engendered in the newspaper world is a need to approach writing and our journalism from a different point of view; we have to arrest the readers’ attention. We are not just the paper of record anymore. We are not just there to give you the who-what-when-where-and-why. They’re doing that on the Internet, they’re doing it on television, they’re doing it on 24-hour cable news, they’re doing it on radio. So what do we have to offer that none of them can?
This passage very easily says how journalists must evolve in order to outplay the TV and internet news outlets, they do facts better, so feature stories must be where we shine.
The kid was Justin Mello, barely 16 years old, popular soccer player at Anchor Bay High School, with a melting smile, a tall athletic frame, a freshly minted driver’s license and a dream of buying his father’s GMC truck with the money earned working at a pizza shop.
Good example of using excessive detail in order to humanize the character and make the bait and switch all the more unexpected and heart wrenching.
One of the mistakes people make in wrapping stories up is that they think that they have to have a huge declarative ending. A big, Ta-da! I think that sometimes, the more subtle the ending, the better.
Brevity is wit. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
The best writing just lets it sit there. Trust your readers, they’re pretty smart. They know how to read, they’re already ahead of most of the rest of the country. And they’ll get it, they’ll get what you’re trying to say. It’ll resonate with them, particularly at ends of stories.
Try not to insert your viewpoint into the story, simply let the reader decide from the details you have given them.
Instead of you saying, “this is terrible, this is sad, this is awful,” look for a picture that tells it better than you and just describe the picture. That’s what we can do as journalists and writers that nobody else can.
People dont need their emotions described to them, just make it so they FEEL them.

DAVID BOWIE
David Bowie. The name that will stand in history as the greatest glam rock musician to ever walk this earth. Nobody really thought he would die anytime soon, he was just too powerful in the ways of rock. But, despite all of his drama, personas, and really neat tunes, he did. Releasing Blackstar less than a week before his death, it was his last hurrah, his last gift to us all. He deserves to be remembered because he was the most radical person ever. RIP
I read articles about Alan Rickman, David Bowie, and Andrew Smith. David Bowie's article was short and to the point, as everyone knew who David Bowie was by this time, he was so influential. Alan Rickman's article was much longer, as some people didn't quite know of his influence. Andrew Smith's article was short, but it was because he had a short, uninteresting life. RIP.

1. This article tells the story of Trudy Steuernagel, a mother trying to raise an autistic young adult with violent tendencies. Throughout the story many references are made to the growing problem of handling autistic children with violent tendencies, and how many of these abusive relationships go unresolved due to the adults unwillingness to come forth with their troubles and risk demonizing the autistic community. The writer shows how dangerous this is by telling Trudy's story, which does not have a happy ending to say the least.
2. The majority of the story is in the past tense, with occasional factoids thrown in in order to give information about the bigger picture. The journalist does not appear in the story.
3. The structure of the story is different from normal. It opens with the recent past, giving the direct information, before moving backwards to show how things got this way. Trudy's death is a certainty, there is no suspense going on in the following paragraphs, only Sky's change from a sweet young boy to a dangerous man with the mind of a child. The story definitely uses the personal fear aspect of the ordeal, having to live under constant fear of your own offspring is something that would send a shiver down the spine of anyone. The article actually lampshades this, by comparing it all to one of the famous greek tragedies. Similes and metaphors are also used, "By then, Trudy's life began to feel a lot like that closet."
4. The writer reported the story in the past tense, with the main sources being Trudy's husband, Trudy's brother, the caretakers of Sky, several experts on autism in general, and Sky themselves. Almost all of the information was taken via interview and public records, and the reporter had no personal involvement to the actual events taken place.

"If this letter has been opened and is being read, it is because I have been seriously injured or killed by my son, Sky Walker. I love Sky with my whole heart and soul and do not believe he has intentionally injured me. I have tried my best to get help for him and to end the pattern of violence that has developed in this home. I believe my best has not been good enough. That is my fault, not Sky's. Numerous people know about the violence and many have witnessed it. We have all failed Sky. I do not want him to be punished for actions for which he is not responsible.

1. Hawthorne says that the biggest mistake fledgeling journalists make is to make a story out of data, and not tell a compelling tale to resonate with those reading. Stories aren't about certain things in particular, but rather, a story about someone, with conflict and resolution. Journalists are advised to decide upon a particular angle before they write the story, as going in knowing what you plan on writing is immensely helpful.
2. Any story can be interesting if you make the human element big enough. He says that writing a good news story is a lot like writing a book, or directing a movie. Character and Dialogue peak interest, the Order of the story is key in taking advantage of the Drama of the story, and building Anticipation for the Climax of the story, ending up with the satisfying Resolution. Write about people, and their flaws and troubles, not about a general topic.

I like this picture because the pope has a funny face on, and I like the pope because of his radical much needed church reforms. It also represents how much the people have wanted this. pool-AP

I like this one because they look cool, and I'd like to save this picture to post to Instagram.

5. The best Sports/Entertainment person of the year was...
DONALD TRUMP
Since the very beginning of 2015, he has been nothing but a laughingstock who has somehow been shooting up the polls for the presidency. He won't win, but maybe as long as he keeps up with this, he'll guarantee a democratic presidency. Thanks for the laughs, space cowboy.
MY VACATION:
in review: i cant remember anything about my christmas, my new years resolution is to lose weight or something, and i am looking forward to who will win the presidency in 2016.
