1. Hawthorne says that the biggest mistake fledgeling journalists make is to make a story out of data, and not tell a compelling tale to resonate with those reading. Stories aren't about certain things in particular, but rather, a story about someone, with conflict and resolution. Journalists are advised to decide upon a particular angle before they write the story, as going in knowing what you plan on writing is immensely helpful.


2. Any story can be interesting if you make the human element big enough. He says that writing a good news story is a lot like writing a book, or directing a movie. Character and Dialogue peak interest, the Order of the story is key in taking advantage of the Drama of the story, and building Anticipation for the Climax of the story, ending up with the satisfying Resolution. Write about people, and their flaws and troubles, not about a general topic.
