wouldnt it be nice

Do you remember the first day of high school? You showed up, a young freshman, ready to take on the world! You were assigned eight different classes, all of which challenged and captivated you. You were finally going to escape the dark middle school years, and find a specialized group of people who shared your interests and desires. It was great!

Except, thats not what really happened. Odds are, you were shoved off from the theater class of your dreams into some business course that nobody wanted to be in or actually took seriously. A "Dump Class", that one shared experience that broke the illusion that the current American school system is actually functional. But can it be changed?

All around the board the schooling system is mostly the same. There are five(ish) core required classes; a math class, a science class, a history class, an english class, and a semi-optional foreign language class of your choice. But, as we mentioned earlier, there are eight different classes, leaving you with the amazing choice of either doing a half assed P.E. class or a different half assed health class. Wouldn't it be better to include a study hall in the place of these? Around half of the people in David Winter's journalism class applied for a different, in some cases required class, and were switched in, leaving the class composed of students unhappy and deprived of their right as a student
to learn what they want, not what the school wants.

Essentially, its kinda messed up that we have all taken the dump class aspect of high school for something that can't be changed, and not as something that can be minimized, if not outright eradicated with more funding or a serious retooling of the American High school system.

  1. This is a good topic. Your reporting, however, was basically distilled down to a 5-minute circuit of the room to find out how many people never intended to take journalism. It is a valid question but it hardly does the topic justice. More reporting would make for a better story.

And it would be nice if I had a class of students who were interested in the subject I was teaching. Everybody would agree with that.
